The F-5-10 visa is a visa code that allows international students who have obtained a bachelor's degree in science or engineering or a master's degree in Korea to acquire permanent residency through the fastest route.
While there are various basic requirements for applying for the F-5-10 visa, I would like to explain a point that many people overlook.
When preparing for the F-5-10 visa—and this is similar for other types of permanent residency as well—the duration of employment is paramount.
I have a Korean master's degree holder whom I have known for a long time.
She had been dreaming of a future working professionally at a large company after obtaining her master's degree. Since her friends had also received permanent residency (F-5-10 visas), she contacted me to seek advice regarding her own future.
Recently, she mentioned that the company she works for has decided not to renew the employment contracts of any of its foreign employees.
I imagine she must have felt very distressed and at a loss as to how to prepare for her future, especially since she was also preparing for the F-5-10 visa.
While talking with her, I realized that there might be something most international students or foreign workers currently employed in Korea are unaware of when applying for permanent residency.
It is the "employment period," which is the core of the F-5-10 visa application but is often overlooked by many.

Recently, rumors have been circulating in the community that one must hold an F-2-99 visa for 5 years to switch to an F-5-1 visa. It is reported that the community is telling its members that guidelines regarding the F-5-1 visa have recently changed.
Is this true?
First, let me explain the status of residence—that is, the visa—that can be changed to an F-2-99 visa.
The employment and business visas that can be changed to an F-2-99 visa include the D-8 visa, D-9 visa, and visas ranging from E-1 to E-7.
The E-7 visa includes E-7-1, E-7-2, E-7-3, and E-7-4 visas.
The community states that to switch from an E-7-4 visa to an F-5-1 visa, one must hold a bachelor's degree or higher.
Furthermore, that community claims that an E-7-4 visa worker holds a bachelor's degree even if they switch to an F-2-99 visa.
Therefore, that community asserts that when switching from an E-7-4 visa to an F-2-99 visa, the duration of the F-2-99 visa cannot be combined with that of the E-7-4 visa.
This claim from that community is not true.

국비장학생으로 학사(D-2-2)나 석사(D-2-3) 과정 등으로 한국에 입국하는 GKS(국비장학생) 유학생은 영주권(F-5) 신청할 때 혜택이 있다고 합니다.
D-2-7 비자는 국비 장학 유학생으로 학위 과정을 졸업하고 학위를 취득하면 영주권 신청할 때 혜택이 있다고 합니다.
1345 외국인종합안내센터 또는 2026년 1월 30일에 발행된 체류자격 매뉴얼에도 일학습연계 유학생(D-2-7)은 학위를 조건으로 하는 영주권을 신청할 수 있다고 되어 있습니다.
그리고 일학습연계 유학생이 영주권을 신청할 때 소득 요건 (통상 GNI 1배)이 면제된다고 매뉴얼 및 1345에서도 안내를 하고 있습니다.
하지만 현재 관할 출입국사무소마다 그 해석을 달리하고 있는 상황입니다.
